Ammiel Alcalay -
※
On April 1st, 2021, seven months before his death, Jimmie Durham sat in a Berlin studio recording a selection of his poems. These were selected by him from his books: Columbus Day (West End Press, 1983); Poems that do not go together (Wiens Verlag, Editions Hansjörg Mayer, 2012) and Particles / Word Theory (Wiens Verlag, Editions Hansjörg Mayer, 2020) as well as a couple of unpublished poems. The release includes a 12- page insert reproducing Jimmie’s visual poems.
Excerpt from the Text by Ammiel Alcalay - For Jimmie Durham, Poet:
Although I wonder why Jimmie Durham isn’t generally thought of as a poet or a writer in the US, actually, once I start thinking about it, I don’t have to wonder that much, because he is, or should be thought of, in relation to a company I know well, but a company that continually seems to be losing ground. I remember encountering Jimmie’s first book, Columbus Day, when it came out in 1983, and thinking, even then, even for me, steeped in the furthest out of poetry and poetics: “ah, here is something, something different, something of great beauty and truth, but also filled with something like documentation, reports, dispatches from the front.” Need one ask for anything more?
