Mies in London is a project by REAL foundation about Mies van der Rohe’s only UK design, a bronze tower and grand plaza called Mansion House Square. Mies in London includes the first ever book on this remarkable work, as well as reproductions of a travertine ashtray and bronze door handle designed by Mies for the Mansion House Square project. Commissioned in 1962 by Lord Peter Palumbo, Mies' masterpiece became embroiled in decades of controversy and was scuppered in 1984 by City Inquiry. In Thatcher's Britain, popular opinion turned against modernism, Prince Charles criticised the work publicly, and the government feared new public spaces. Mies in London is edited by Jack Self and Yulia Rudenko and designed by OK-RM. The book includes 160 pages of unseen and painstakingly restored material, sourced from nearly a dozen institutions and private collections around the world (amongst them RIBA, the CCA and Drawing Matter). The book design is unprecedented in architectural publishing, with no introduction or academic essays. Mies in London explores how to make an archive feel contemporary through a running image and caption structure.
