Grey Paintings accompanies Julie Mehretu’s 2016 exhibition Hoodnyx, Voodo and Stelae at Marian Goodman Gallery. The work is dedicated to the tragic changes wrought in the Middle East by the collapse of the optimism of the Arab spring, as certain rising violence against the other in in the United States. Well known for architectural painting that pay tribute to the cultures of the Middle East, past and present, Mehretu has expressed pride in the magnificence of their cultural achievements. The new paintings express heartbreak over the brutal events of recent years, using abstraction to describe the indescribable. With a poem by Patricia Smith and a new essay by artist Glenn Ligon, Grey Paintings focuses on Julie Mehretu's recent work of the last 5 years.
