‘Hello My Name Is...’ sees Nadia physically manifest herself into 33 characters (both female and male) imagined from 33 found name badges. It is a demanding work of make up, prosthetics and costume. Alongside each portrait is a still-life of found objects associated with each persona. Nadia herself is unrecognisable in many of the portraits - only the true character of the character is seen. The project lends this biography its title: Who Isn’t Nadia Lee Cohen?
HELLO My name is is a remarkable book. Obsessed with flea markets, car boot sales (and the the leftovers of lives lived in recent urban history that they hold), Nadia collected the name badges of 33 unknown individuals. She created personas for them, visualised them and ultimately transformed herself into them. The photographic portraits and resulting book are the product of many hours spent in wardrobe, make up and prosthetics.
Martin Parr and Paul Reubens / Pee-wee Herman provide short texts for the book:
“Nadia has taken the great American optimism of the 1960s and 1970s and, with a heap of props and a well of nostalgia and genuine affection, populated her studio with characters of that time. Her transformation transforms them; they are all her and she is all of them.” Martin Parr
“I know a thing or two about alter egos. This is probably why someone thought I’d be right to write this foreword. But, I have only one alter ego. The number that Nadia Lee Cohen has, that you are about to see inside this staggeringly gorgeous book, is astounding.” Paul Reubens
There are also texts in the book attributed to each of the 33 characters. Snippets of dialogue delivered in character on video by Nadia during the shoots for the book. She spoke them to help herself find and embody the characters. They have been included in the book.
The book closes out with a brilliant collection of on set Polaroids.
