This is the complete book of Finnish author and artist Tove Jansson’s illustrations, featuring original drawings and artwork for the nine Moomin novels. The titular character Moomin first appeared in Moomins and the Great Flood, published in 1945 and written during the war period. Since then, the tale and characters are timelessly beloved by people around the world.
The illustrations tell their own story; of the Moomin characters and their adventures; and of Tove Jansson's remarkable talent and career as an illustrator. The book’s title Mischievous Nature derives from the characters' rather irreverent behaviour and the abundance of nature that surrounds their world.
This book comes with a magnifying glass (a cardboard cutout with a printed illustration) through which to view small illustrations, as well as fold-out covers of the original novels and a double-sided foldout poster of the Moomin Valley maps.
There are such a lot of things that have no place in summer and autumn and spring. Everything that’s a little shy and a little rum. Some kinds of night animals and people that don’t fit in with others and that nobody really believes in. They keep out of the way all the year. And then when everything’s quiet and white and the nights are long and most people are a sleep—then they appear.
