Ang Song NianPM2.5201611PSIPollutant Standards Index365DECKThe Photograph As Atlas : Hanging heavy On My Eyes20161125 - 2017126
Ang Song Nian (2016) began as a year-long observation of the recurring situation in Singapore and its region of prolonged haze spells due to increased forest fires in neighbouring Indonesia contributing to severe air pollution conditions. Consist of 365 silver gelatin prints in this series, the artist recorded the highest and lowest local Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) readings at noon daily and translated the data into corresponding exposure timings on the enlarger in a traditional darkroom. This work recollects Ang’s experience with the discomfort and unease of reduced and affected visibility - a result of conditions in human’s continuous bid to control, intervene and manipulate landscapes and environment aligned to narrow-minded agendas. ANG Song Nian works with materials and traces of human behaviours made visible within landscapes through photographic documentations and installation. Intrigued bu the narration of thoughts and ideologies through visuals, he has always favoured a microscopic approach to concepts, a style which he always employ to open up details in his practice. Published on the occasion of the exhibition ‘The Photograph As Atlas : Hanging heavy On My Eyes’ at DECK on 25 Nov 2016 - 26 Jan 2017.
