Language is at the centre of Radiator Theatre. Each piece in the collection creates their own lexicon and explores, in the artist’s own words, “[a] range of wordplays, rhymes, misinterpretations, exaggerations, and lies through lyrical shapes and colors.” As the name implies, the abstract subjects were staged on top of the radiator in Jang’s apartment and captured by the artist’s body and camera moving in improvisational response to changing external conditions like the position of the sun streaming through the window or the delicate, fragile nature of the sets. The physicality and malleability of the process informs the work’s act of language-making. Interfacing with each other through their shadows, imperfect hand-cut borders, and colored washes, the subjects in Radiator Theatre act out imaginative and compelling narratives.
